I recommend (in addition to your fantastic selection) some women writers from Japan! Some really interesting tidbits about imperial Japan, court life, and femininity can be found in the likes of:

1. The Pillow Book

2. The Diary of Lady Murasaki

Thank you so much! I’m going to be visiting Japan this year so have been looking for some more Japanese literature so this is perfect. I enjoy Natsume Soseki, Mieko Kawakami and Izumi Suzuki, so going to read more of them. I’ve also got In Praise of Shadows by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki on my list!
